Chapter Nine

Harm smiled into her eyes, the rumble of his laughter a quiet echo in the room.

Talia loved that he could joke as they stood next to the shower in nothing but their birthday suits. He didn’t make her feel awkward or insecure. Since she hadn’t been out on a date or with another man since before she married her husband, the whole business of getting to know each other was fairly new to her.

“No kidding, Talia. I can still be swayed by a simple no. But mark my words,” he said. “I won’t give up easily. I go after what I want. And I want you.”

Her gaze slipped from his eyes to his mouth. She didn’t want to say it, but she couldn’t help herself. “You haven’t mentioned a word about love.”

Harm shook his head. “That might take a little longer. You see, where you think you might not be ready, there’s an equally big hesitation on my part. When my fiancée dumped me for another guy, I swore I wouldn’t fall for that kind of relationship again. What I feel for you is purely physical.”

Talia’s chest tightened. She’d bet he was afraid of love and commitment. She spread her hand over his heart, her fingers warm against his skin. “Are you sure?” she whispered.

“Sweetheart, I know I want you. That’s a one hundred percent certainty.” He looked away. “Anything else, I can’t say for sure. Can we leave it at that? I’m not asking you for commitment, nor am I promising the same. If that’s a deal breaker, speak now.”

With a sigh, Talia slid her hand up to circle around the back of his neck. “It’s not a deal breaker. It’s just that I’ve never been in a purely physical relationship.” She leaned up on her toes and touched her lips to his in a feather-soft kiss. The caress was over almost before it began, yet she wanted more. “How do you guard your heart, to keep it from breaking?”

“You leave your heart out of it,” he said in a harsh tone. “This is all about the needs of a man and a woman.”

Someone really must have hurt the man to make him so cynical. Though she still had love in her heart for Michael, she couldn’t deny her attraction to Harm. “Mmm. I have needs. But they aren’t all physical.” She pulled him down for another teasing kiss. Her breasts brushed against his chest, causing electricity to shoot straight to her core.

It must have hit him, too, because his shaft grew longer and harder. She’d bet he could drive nails with it. Her lips quirked at the image in her mind.

“Shouldn’t we get under the water before it grows cold?” she prompted.

Harm sucked in a steadying breath and stepped under the spray, bringing Talia with him.

The water drenched them, running in rivulets over their shoulders.

Talia studied the paths the little tributaries took as gravity led them downward. Across the massive planes of his chest, down the rock-hard abs to where his shaft jutted out, strong and full.
